“The most valuable of all talents is that of never using two words when one will do.” – Thomas Jefferson
Whether it's the novel you have poured your heart and soul into, the short story that just won't 'click', or a thesis that needs to capture the blood, sweat and tears of three years of hard study ... it is going to need an editor.
I have been writing for twenty-five years and editing for seven. In that time I have learned that no writer has to be told how to do their job but that a good editor can make a significant contribution to the final piece.
If you choose me to work alongside you, I will take you step by step towards realising your ideas with clarity and precision. You will be supported, encouraged and reassured. Your aims will be listened to and understood before any editing begins so that we can work together to connect with your audience, strengthen your ideas and develop your skills.
My pledge is that I will respect your process while guiding you towards a greater realisation of your powers as a writer.
Your writing starts and ends with you, which is why I will never tell you what to write. I will make it my business to fully understand your work and what you are aiming to achieve with it before any editing begins. The process will be collaborative from start to finish so that you are always in control. Your first draft will always be your piece. With my help, the final draft will also belong to your reader.
A good editor listens to their writer, respects their voice and works in collaboration with them to realise their goals.
I will be checking for grammar, spelling, punctuation and consistency as well as flow and structure. This will be done without compromising your style or intentions. But I will also be on hand to give advice and guidance both during and after the project. This will develop your piece but also provide you with the tools and know-how to bring future projects to life.
Working with an editor is about more than getting the piece into shape. It's about becoming a better writer.
A writer needs to know that their editor will always be on hand with advice and support. That means still being there for you when guidance, encouragement and advice are needed - or just a friendly ear. Good editing is about more than the writing. It's also about the writer.
Every writer needs to be able to trust their editor. Peace of mind means a clear head to do what you do best: write.
“Remember the waterfront shack with the sign FRESH FISH SOLD HERE. Of course it’s fresh, we’re on the ocean. Of course it’s for sale, we’re not giving it away. Of course it’s here, otherwise the sign would be someplace else. The final sign: FISH.”
